social-media-myths

One of the reasons I’ve written this post is the amount of misinformation out there regarding how to be successful on social media. I have seen too often churches, para-churches, non-profits and business fall into this trap. I hope this post helps you and demythologises (wow big word!) some of the most common social media myths around! Continue Reading…

August’s Facebook social reach

I’ve been very impressed with the increased functionally that Facebook has offered on Facebook pages with sponsored posts and advertising. Over the last month I’ve been trialing and testing this new functionality. Here is what I’ve discovered. Continue Reading…

how-churches-use-social-media

Came across this great infographic today on how churches use social media on Mashable. Surprising stat at the bottom in the church communications section about the most effective communications channel. Continue Reading…

Social-media-stuffup

I came across a huge social media stuff-up that started a firestorm of very negative feedback on Facebook. I was stunned by what had happened. Backtracking a bit, it was being reported that a young girl tragically died in a farm accident last week and a news crew turned up very soon afterwards (including a helicopter) and the family said they were on the property filming the family while they were still grieving (My thoughts and prayers are with the grieving family).

If that wasn’t bad enough, the grief-stricken mum later posted her complaint on Seven Sydney news Facebook page and said this: Continue Reading…

The social media world and particularly Facebook seems to be changing faster than Usain Bolt can run a 100 metre race. One minute Instagram is a cool independent mobile App, the next moment Facebook swallows it up. The next moment Facebook goes public and raises a pile of cash for Mark Zuckerberg and Co. Then, Facebook release (today) Facebook Camera.

All it seems to have happened in the space of a few weeks. The change is relentless and seems to be increasing at an every rapid rate. Yet with all of the news and updates that go on, one principle remains unchanged – Social media is still social. Engagement with your audience is the No. 1 reason why you should be on social media in the first place. Continue Reading…

Facebook timeline

It’s been a big week on Facebook this week. They’ve rolled out the new Facebook timeline for fan pages. Don’t worry, the changes won’t come into effect until March 30 2012. But get ready. This is a big update.

Here is a list of what I’ve seen so far of what you need to know: Continue Reading…

more facebook engagement

I attended a brilliant online free seminar last week hosted by Darren Rowse, Facebook expert Amy Porterfield and Lewis Howes about improving your Facebook marketing. Normally these types of ‘free’ seminars make hyperbolic claims in their marketing and I run a million miles in the opposite direction, rolling my eyes and tut-tutting all the way back into the depths of my office. But this one didn’t. It seemed quite sensible in the claims in their marketing.

To be honest. I trust Darren. After being attending a few of his events and having bought a few of his books I now know that you can be assured that his projects will deliver what they claim to offer.  Unlike many Probloggers, Darren is thankfully free of over-promising and comes across as a really honest guy that knows quite a bit about the online space.

Man-crush over and done with. Back to the topic at hand. Continue Reading…

Custom church facebook landing page

I had a huge response recently when I wrote about how created my own Facebook landing page. I had such fun making my own Facebook page that I thought I would create a simple step by step guide so that anyone could do it. If you know me you’ll know that I’m really cheap ;-). I really do like a bargin and because I’m a blogger with no budget, I especially love getting things for free. During my search to find the right solution to develop my own Facebook landing page I found some very tasty free Facebook App’s whichI thought I would do a short review of them and tell you what I think. Custom church facebook landing page

I love seeing churches use social media effectively. Many have their wall as the first page you see which I don’t quite understand given the capabilities of Facebook pages. A small number of churches seem to be creating custom landing pages which I REALLY like. (I recently wrote a step by step guide about how you can create your own custom Facebook page).  Continue Reading…

How To Create A Facebook Page

I recently moved my blog from Typepad to WordPress and I needed to create a new Facebook page because my old Facebook page was somehow linked in with my Typepad account and I couldn’t figure out how to separate it from my old blog. I have people following that first page (and my new one) from all over the world which is so cool. The best part of creating this new page was to create my own custom landing page/welcome screen. I’d like to share with you how I did it. Continue Reading…
